The Wetaskiwin and District Amateur Football Association is moving forward with its season while the City of Wetaskiwin works on a solution to field time issues.
During the April 23 City council meeting, Coun. Kevin Lonsdale put forward a Notice of Motion asking council to consider adding lights on additional football fields or more intensive maintenance of the Norm Brown Field.
At the time of the Notice of Motion, WDAFA was considering cancelling the season because the Norm Brown field is the only lighted football field and the City had indicated they only wanted that field used for games because of the number of teams using the field, including amateur and school football and soccer.
“One-hundred and sixty Wetaskiwin and area youths may not have a season,”said Lonsdale.
The matter will be coming to the May 13 council meeting for consideration.
Since the Notice of Motion was given, WDAFA president Codey Soanes said they are moving forward with the season falling discussions with the City manager.
“We are moving ahead, so we will have a season,”he said “The field was going to be used for just games but that poses a predicament for us in the fall when we can’t practice because it’s too dark. We need lights.”
Soanes said he hasn’t heard yet what the solution being proposed by the City is yet but the football association has been assured their season can go ahead.
